If you are interested in learning more about our 1:1 technology implementation, we are hosting visitors again in January and April. Find the specifics here.
On October 23rd, 4 school districts visited Wood Dale School District 7 to learn about our curriculum development and 1:1 technology implementation. In the morning, visitors listened to presentations given by administrators, instructional coaches, and technology department. During the afternoon, participants visited classrooms to see learning and technology in action. Students served as ambassadors by explaining how they use technology to learn. When reading, there are many things that are happening inside of our brains. We are decoding words, using prior-knowledge and connecting prior-knowledge to subjects and things that we know. Most importantly, all of this leads to COMPREHENDING the text. Teachers work hard to explicitly teach students how to comprehend by explaining to them what should be happening in their brains to better understand the text. Then, teachers have students practice this skill to make it become automatic. In this featured lesson, Ms. Schayer worked with Ms. Jackson's 2nd grade class to learn about making inferences when reading. The students explored "clean trash" to learn the skill of inferencing. They used the clues in the trash, and what they already knew about the items, to infer information about the people who may have thrown these items away. The inferencing skill from this lesson will then be transferred to real reading. To see pictures and learn more about this activity see Ms. Schayer's blog. Below is a quick video about inferencing. Parents can watch this with their children and teachers can use this as an instructional tool. Thank you Ms. Schayer for sharing this lesson with your PLC. |
