Social Science P.D.
On November 1st & 2nd, teachers from 7 school districts participated in social science P.D. at our junior high to learn about the new social science standards. The standards contain 2 complementary categories: inquiry skills and disciplinary concepts. The writers of the standards expect that the two will be used simultaneously. Inquiry involves questioning, investigating, reasoning, and responsible action while disciplinary concepts make use of social science ideas, principles, and content to pursue answers to the questions generated by student inquiries. Throughout the rest of this school year, participants have been asked to try and incorporate the inquiry standards into their current teaching. These standards are in line with what we have already been doing with the inquiry skills in science and ELA with constructing questions, evaluating sources and finding evidence to support claims. On the last day of the P.D. session, we asked participants from all districts to complete a Google Form to provide feedback on how we can continue to work together to accomplish the end goal of delivering a viable, reliable, and engaging curriculum to our students. Stay tuned for further updates.
The Wood Dale Community Curriculum Advisory Council met October 27th. The CCAC is made up of two parents from each school (chosen by the PTO), a representative from the Board of Education, community members, and administrators. The agenda and CCAC representatives are posted on our website.
