On April 16th, Westview students were able to get hands-on with some exciting “STEM” activities—Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Using real life application and exciting visual displays, all students were each given nearly an hour to explore 25 different fantastic activities provided by the Northern Illinois University STEM outreach program. This program supplies different stations and a faculty member to help assist in teaching the students various concepts. Each station was hands-on and the students and teachers were enthusiastic throughout. We also enjoyed enthusiastic volunteer helpers from around the Wood Dale Community. Fenton High School supplied volunteers to run the different activities from their very own STEM program. We also had volunteers from our Wood Dale Senior's Club. It was a wonderful opportunity to have senior citizens interact with the 3rd-5th graders among exciting STEM activities. A few of the most popular activities were the Tesla coil to demonstrate electricity transfer and the Van de Graaff generator which generates enough static electricity to make some of the children’s hair stand straight up! Westview School received two grants to be used for science and math education from our local Mobil stations in order to cover the costs of the event. Thank you to Wood Dale Mobil (337 W. Irving Park Road) and Bucky's Mobil (1000 N. Wood Dale Road) for your support. This was a valuable school event with generous community support!
